We are excited to announce the arrival of design summit [SYD], the first city in our next initiative, the design summit tour – 7 global design cities discussing the intersection between the cultural, economic and social impacts of design.

Last year we had a review after the awards and recognised we’d achieved a huge amount in growing demand for design, celebrating those who both commission design and create design. Our mission was well served, however we could see there was more to be done.

The solution to this was twofold; firstly, we needed to get more fuel in the tank for the nominated design projects. Unlike the tech start-up world design projects often need project funding not start-up funding. They also need licensing and distribution. So we’ve pulled together a [deals] event – the focus of the event is to help grow the value stack for design projects, funding, marketing, manufacturing, distribution, licensing – I think you can get the idea.

The second element was a forum based on the nominated design projects. At each awards presentation we witnessed lots of sharing of tips, ideas and how to between different design commissioners and creators. Rather than have that dialogue amongst a few we’ve pulled together the design economy [forum]– a special event focusing on the business of design projects. Again the content of the forum will be sourced from award winning nominations, facilitated by the advisory panel and will provide a learning opportunity for both those who commission and create projects.

It’s taken 10 months to pull the program together and over the last few weeks we’ve been trying to ground the details across all 7 cities. Today we can announce the Sydney program -  actually tickets are now on sale so get in quick as the tickets really are limited. We’re very pleased to announce our venue partner is the Australian Design Centre (you probably knew them as Object). The catch is the Australian Design Centre isn’t huge when it comes to a forum, so get in quick. Tickets will sell out.

Nominations for Sydney Design Awards have been extended until 30 July - that’s right you can still nominate if you missed out. We know how busy things can get, hopefully the additional time helps you find the 15-30 min needed to nominate your project.  We’ll be inviting award winning projects from the awards to participate in the [deals] and [forum] sessions.

Over the last year the design100 community has grown, our projects have grown and the impact of the community has grown. Without the generous assistance of the panel, collaborators and community members none of this would be possible. In the next 5 months design100 will be running awards programs, 5 design summits including the [deals] event, the design economy [forum] and [awards] presentation. We’ll celebrate over 500 design projects, better understand their success formula and assist over 100 projects grow their value stack.

It’s going to be one hell of a ride, glad to have you along for the journey.
