Partner Case Study - Brunel Professional Risks

Brunel advises firms in relation to professional risk exposure and many of its clients are architects and others involved in the design of the built environment. Clusters of such firms have developed in London, particularly in hubs such as the Farringdon, Camden, Shoreditch triangle. Brunel is also working with designers in other business sectors, particularly those in the technology and media arenas.

Brunel Professional Risks showed an early interest in the 2014 London Design Awards and we asked Trevor Moss, Director of Brunel’s London operation to tell us what it was that attracted this ‘Square Mile’ based insurance and risk management business to support  the inaugural year of the Awards.

“There were several reasons which prompted Brunel to become an Awards Partner and to celebrate London based creativity, ranging from promoting the showcasing of great design to that of participation in a business networking opportunity.”

Moss also adds “We were impressed with the ethos of the awards and the passion with which the LDA organisers showed in promoting great design arising from young, vibrant businesses. Brunel is now approaching its 10th year. Our business curve has been a rapid one over the past decade from our own establishment as a micro start-up to a mature organisation which is now represented throughout the UK with a team of more than 60 people based in London, Bristol and Manchester. Brunel has been on a journey which many of our clients have embarked upon, so there is a synergy between the lessons we have learned as a growing, dynamic business and those similarly experienced by our clients. Brunel has been able to build a strong, stable client base though its focus on the SME sector together with a unique business proposition and the skills and enthusiasm of its people. Our expertise and advice has led to many of our SME clients benefiting from a more secure and profitable future by reducing and transferring elements of risk exposure”.

Furthermore, Brunel appreciates the value of the recognition of business awards as a clear message of professionalism. During the past 3 years Brunel has received industry recognition as a finalist in various insurance industry awards and  was winner of the British Insurance Awards ‘Commercial Lines Broker of the Year to the SME/Mid-Corporate sector’. This peer recognition has provided Brunel with an additional marketing tool and added further assurance to stakeholders such as insurers, clients and staff.

Much of this additional demand for our services is being driven by financial backers of  such enterprises demanding that their capital is protected, not just from the exposure of negligence claims but increasingly in relation to the risk of the devaluation of the investment opportunity as a consequence of other factors such as intellectual property infringement disputes. “The end-clients of technology design service companies are increasingly looking to ‘lock down’ the provider of such design services in contract” say Moss. “Sometimes  these contractual requirements are drafted in such a way that they can be quite onerous. We are often requested to review draft contract agreements from a risk management perspective. Additionally, more end-clients are insisting that appointed professional design service providers purchase professional indemnity and other liability insurances.

This is where Brunel is ideally positioned to assist in providing suitable and cost-effective solutions.

Editor note:
Brunel was a great marriage for the London Design Awards. They offer a great service to those in the design and tech sector. We were really impressed how Trevor and his team operate and encourage any of our UK based members to get in touch with Brunel and have a chat regarding your risk exposure.
