Project Overview

Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart School Awards recognises the achievements of Victorian primary and secondary schools in sustainability. It has become a prestigious Awards program that highlights and encourages resource efficiency in Victorian Schools. The Awards event included both a student led forum and a formal awards ceremony.

An important element for the event was the theme that relayed a key message and a provided a platform for the graphic design that was fun, vibrant and appropriate for the audience. The theme was ‘Ideas + Action = Change’ which was a play on a maths equation and a winning formula. The use of the plus & equals symbols was easy to re-call, results driven and communicated that we can all contribute for the right outcome.

Project Brief

It is a successful Awards program; almost half of Victoria’s schools are now involved in the ResourceSmart Schools initiative. So the event had to recognise and reward early years, primary and secondary schools’ initiatives designed to embed sustainability in every aspect of what they do.

Immediacy’s scope was to devise the event theme and event design, the event logistics and coordination, management of the MCs, the production of the audio/visual elements, photography and the venue and catering. Like all successful event design, the graphic elements needed to be appropriate, strong and consistently branded throughout the event touch-points.

It was important to devise a design that would resonate with the audience of children and teachers and work in the plenary, presentation rooms, foyer and onscreen. Immediacy produced the awards theme graphic ‘Ideas + Action = Change’ working from the existing ResourceSmart Schools colour palette and guidelines. The graphic ‘Ideas + Action = Change’ would be the platform for a design that was vibrant, playful and had an education-theme.

Project Need

Great design contributes to the success of any event. Technical excellence and a smooth-running event should be a given yet the development of an insightful theme and creative execution should be the objective for every event manager. This ensures targeted communication and the invaluable recalling of the key messages.

This project focused on a creative design that related to children, students, teachers and sustainability, was easy to apply across the event elements and was able to be integrated into the speeches and games featured in the event.

We were conscious of sustainable measures as children pick up on every detail so we needed to show the way with the reduction of waste and the sourcing of local materials that can be recycled.

User Experience

The approach to the event design and the injection of the theme design elements using the ResourceSmart Schools artwork contributed to engaging student-led presentations.

The plenary session was also successful with the high-profile television personalities/ presenters leading the fun with an energetic delivery of the script and running order, interactive games and photo/autograph opportunities.

The Awards also showcased local talent keeping the energy and excitement level up for the audience. All of these elements contribute to a successful event and further momentum for the Awards program for the following twelve months.

Sustainability

The first step was the selection of the venue. The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre was chosen due to its 6-Star Green Star environment rating by the Green Building Council of Australia for the Convention Centre’s innovative environmental design and operational features 5-star sustainability certification. Features include substantial natural light, energy efficient lighting, solar hot water, radiant slab heating and cooling. Practices include waste management composting facilities, waste separation, sustainable catering menus, SecondBite food donations, e-water and green power.

Initiatives:
• 100% recyclable boxes that were featured onstage and were reused after the event by schools
• Local sourcing of boxes and printing
• We walked to many of the suppliers
• Re-use of name-tags and the red carpet
• No paper/plastic cups and plates were used and food wrapping was minimised
• Use of food scrap bins for organic waste and recycling bins and we checked with the venue that these would actually be composted or recycled after the bins were collected by the venue.
• Chairs were hired and not bought for the early childhood room
• Some of the key VIPs and guests walked or took public transport to the venue
