South East Water | Learning about water

Website

Silver

Project Overview

Did you know that we probably drink the same water as the dinosaurs drank? South East Water approached us to turn their approach to helping primary school teachers educate kids about water on it's head. We had to make it fun, engaging and educational. Including parallax animation to discover water cycles, games and easy access for teachers to lesson plans and information - it was an education in itself just working on this site.

Project Brief

South East Water approached HubGroup to create a website that would become an exciting, industry leading educational experience accessible and engaging to both the kids and the teachers alike.
A fun brief as what teachers and primary school kids find engaging - can obviously be quite different.
Melbourne centric to be particularly relevant to students and teachers in South East Waters catchment area, it's a site to educate everyone who wants to learn more about he importance of water and how we use it.

Project Innovation/Need

We have brought the Natural Water Cycle and the Melbourne Water Cycle to life through Parallax animation. This allows teachers to take students through the Water Cycles at their own speed and discover all sorts of extra little facts along the way through pop ups and mini animations.
It's a fun but straightforward way to learn so much about water in nature and what happens once humans take water our of nature to use in our homes. And once the kids have learned a little, the knowledge can be applied in games specially designed around the water cycle.
We've been able to help South East Water develop exciting and an industry leading online experience for both teachers and students.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to think like a kid and think like a teacher at the same time. Developing visual tools for teachers that would allow them to use their interactive whiteboards in a way to engage and educate. What would the teachers find easy to use, allow them to stop and explain and allow their students to have a little fun on the way.

User Experience

Given the site has only just launched there's little to go on as yet however the South East Water Project Commissioner has commented:

"The feedback that I’ve received has all been fantastic. Everyone agrees that it is a clever, fun and effective site. From the analytics it appears that people are using it the way we wanted ie going to the landing page then looking through both water cycles and then the resource page so that’s great too. We have had an increase in bookings but at least now when we are booked out we can direct them back to the website with a suggested lesson plan.

I also have to say that the website has been a dream to work with. So user friendly and intuitive."

We are confident that this will translate into a lot more school students becoming more informed and engaged with our planets precious water.
